The Job

1. Pickers are transported from the caravan park to their picking blocks each morning and at lunch-time then returned after work. Pickers are also transported to the nearest toilets when required.

2. Each picker is issued with a picking bag and a sizing ring (if size picking), and ladders are supplied in the orchard.

3. Suitable clothing, including a hat and long sleeves, should be worn to protect against the sun.

4. Prior to the start of picking, a training session is held for all pickers, but later starters receive individual training.

5. The ganger allots each picker a row of trees to be picked. The fruit is picked into the picking bag then tipped into a fruit bin.

6. As bins are filled they are replaced by the ganger. Each bin is recorded for the picker's daily tally and quality monitoring.

Pay

An inexperienced picker might pick only 1 or 2 bins a day for the first week, but this total should gradually increase. Experienced pickers often pick 6 to 8 bins daily.
